  • Your Merit Badge Selections and Prerequisites - must do before camp

Follow the link below to download the merit badge schedule for Lost Lake, and the prerequisites that must be done before camp. The prerequisites were read at one of the May meetings, so it's not the first time you've seen them. An adult leader will check that you have done the prerequisites.

You can check out a book before camp by contacting Librarian Will S., but it must be brought to camp. You can also buy your own book at LLSR or at the Council Office off Telegraph in the Oakland County Service Center. You can turn in extra money on Sunday when we leave for merit badge supplies (cost is on the prerequisite page) and merit badge books you want to buy ($4.50 each). The troop library will buy back gently used books for $2 if we need extra copies.

I suggest you go to www.meritbadge.org and download and print the worksheets for the Merit Badges you are taking. Be sure to bring them to camp.

Look for another announcement soon with last minute reminders for camp.

Any questions, email Mr. Verlinde (dverlinde@comcast.net)

  • Summer Camp Medications

Lost Lake Camp has strick regulations regarding medications.  Their guide states:  "All medications must be in the original packaging with instructions clearly visiblie.  Campers that are going to be taking medications need to have a separate Camper Medication Form filled out for EACH medication and signed by a parent or guardian."  This form is under Summer Camp forms; it is a PDF "optional".   Please e-mail (garyhoward@wideopenwest.com) or fax (313-849-5516) me a copy and send the original with your son on Sunday.  Thank You.  Gary Howard

  • Paint Creek 20-mile Hike Permission Slip

Permission slip for the 20-mile Paint Creek Trail hike, scheduled for Saturday, July 18, 2009 is now posted to the website.

  • Mackinac - Who do you want to be in a patrol with? Last chance for input.

The Mackinac leaders are going on an exploratory trip to the Island this Thursday, and will be putting the patrols together. If you have not let Mr. Verlinde know who you want to be in a patrol with, you will lose your chance for input unless you e-mail him NOW. Please send your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice of patrol mates and the leaders will attempt to place you with at least one of your choices.

  • Philmont Pack Shakedown

The pack shakedown for the Philmont trip will take place on Saturday, July 18th at the conclusion of the 20-mile hike. The pack shakedown is mandatory for those attending Philmont. Full pack and gear are required for this. If you cannot make this date, the alternative date will be Sunday, July 12th at 6:30pm in the lower lot of the Clinton River Trail (below the OPC). Those interested, we will be hiking 'the stairs' immediately following this.

  • 20-Miler Confirmed! Mark the date!

We will have a 20-mile hike on Saturday, July 18th for anyone interested. This is the 'biggest' requirement for the Hiking merit badge which could be used as an Eagle requirement. It is for anyone interested but of particular interest to those boys that have attended Philmont, a Smokies/Shenandoah trip, or both. We will meet at 7:45am on that Saturday in the parking lot on Second Ave., just east of the fire station. We will leave promptly at 8:00am and hike the Paint Creek Trail into Lake Orion and return. We will eat lunch in Lake Orion so bring money for that. Wear comfortable shoes!! Otherwise, just bring plenty of water. A permission slip will be posted shortly.

  • Mackinac Practice Reminder

The 2nd Mackinac practice is Tuesday June 16 from 7 to 9 PM at the Rochester Community House. Please wear Class B short uniform. Do not wear other shorts. Mackinac manuals will be distributed, as well as guidebooks and patches if you haven't already received them. Your final payment of $132 (including bike) is now past due. Spending money (up to $30) and Grand Luncheon Buffet at the Grand Hotel ($19) may be paid at this meeting, but is not due until August 16. A few of you still have not turned in contact forms or transportation forms.

If you don't have all the uniform parts you need, please work on securing them now. The Boy Scout office in Pontiac is the best place to purchase items, although you can order them online. http://www.scoutstuff.org/bsasupply/.

Your uniform MUST have official BSA items, including socks. "Look alike" or "knock-off" uniform parts from non-BSA sources are not allowed. Because this is a transition year for the official uniform, you may wear either the classic or centennial uniform, or a combination. You need both long pants and shorts (or the convertible pants). If you need a new pair, the centennial canvas convertible pants are probably the best bet for year round wear and are less expensive than the nylon ones. Preferred socks are the crew length sock, no stripe is preferred, but red stripe is OK if you still have them. You'll need several pair of socks. . Remember you need brown or black dress shoes. Tennis shoes or hiking boots are not allowed. Shoulder loops can be red or forest green, although green is preferred.

Please let Mr. Verlinde know (dverlinde@comcast.net) if you will not be attending this practice. Victor H. and Cameron C. are already excused. Remember you are expected to attend a minimum of 3 of the 5 marching practices.

The official Mackinac trip web site is www.davidverlinde.com where I've posted all the forms and information you need. Check it out!

One final request - please let Mr. Verlinde know who you want to be in a patrol with. Send him your first, second, and third choice, and he will make every effort to place you with at least one of them. Patrol Leaders will be announced tonight.

  • ALL Lost Lake Summer Camp Attendees–Mandatory Swim Test Next Saturday, June 20th @ 8:45 AM

All Scouts and Adults that will be attending Lost Lake Summer Camp are required to be at a swim test next Saturday, June 20th from 8:45 till 10:00 AM.  We will be meeting at Brookwood Country Club at 8:45 AM to do our swim test.  This will save us tremendous time when we arrive at camp on Sunday July 5th.  Please arrive at the Brookwood pool by 8:45 AM dressed in your swimsuit and ready to swim as there may not be changing rooms available.  We will have a Red Cross WSI who will assess our swimming skills and rank each of us as a Non-swimmer, beginner, or swimmer.  For those of you new to the scout test I have listed the requirements below.  This will determine what section of the swim area you will be allowed to be in at camp.  This will be the initial assessment and there will be opportunities during the week to improve skills and be retested.  We must be completed and out of the Brookwood pool before 10:00 AM.  Brookwood is located on the south side on Tienken road, between Livernois and Brewster.  If there is a conflict that cannot be worked around, you must call Mr. Holloway @ 248-650-6108 or Mr. Verlinde @ 248-651-4031 and let us know.

     SWIMMER'S TEST:

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side stroke, *** stroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting back stroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

     BEGINNER'S TEST:

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.

  • Computers Merit Badge - Reminder

Boy Scouts  are invited to visit my workplace:

    Dassault Systemes DELMIA Corp

    Auburn Hills, MI 48326

Monday June 22 from 12:00 to 1:30 PM.
Pizza lunch to be served 1:30 - 2:00 PM

This visit counts towards requirements no. 7 and no. 9 of the Computers Merit Badge.  This visit is worthwhile even if you don't plan on completing the Merit Badge.  One of our staff, trained to work with students,  will give you a hands-on presentation of the exciting 3D simulation software we build.  In fact, this visit might motivate you to finish the Computers badge!

If you are interested, please let me know by emailing nsmerchawi@gmail.com.  I need to have an approximate number of attendees.  You need to provide your own transportation.
