April 2010 - Posts

  • Sunday Court of Honor - May 2nd

We have a lot of advancement activity to be recognized this Sunday at the Spring Court of Honor.    This is at 2 PM at Oak Arbor Church.

In addition to quite an array of rank advancements and merit badges, Troop 125 is pleased to honor 4 Eagle Scouts!    In our memory, this is a new T125 high for one Court of Honor!   This means even more cake and refreshments than is normal!

Even if you don't have a rank advancement the COH is an important and fun event to be a part of  . . . . families AND Scouts!

Scouts  - we want you looking good . . . obviously full class A uniform.        And just think - if you don't go to this . . . the alternative could be mowing your lawn!

  • Last Minute Cleveland Information

We'll soon be on our way to the Rock and Roll Capital of the World!

    Here are a few reminders:

    1. Bring rain gear in case we get "misted". (It never rains on scout campouts).

    2. Wear Class B green shirt with scout pants for the drive to Cleveland. Be sure to bring Class A shirt for Saturday.

    3. You might want a few dollars for souveniers.

    4. Mr. V. never has time for dinner so he will stop for food. You can get some too if you bring extra money and promise to eat fast! (Mr. H. often follows Mr. V.)

    5. Don't forget sierra cup and silverware. We will NOT supply paper and plastic!

    6. Bring pen or pencil. You should have one anyway, but especially for the museum scavenger hunt (which will get you a patch if you're successful!)

    7. Please be on time for departure (especially Mr. V. who is usually late). We need to leave really close to 6 PM so come a few minutes early.

    8. Please send me an emergency phone number, and scout cell phone number (if you have cell phone). Mr. V. forgot to put it on the permission slip.

    9. PLEASE e-mail me (dverlinde@comcast.net) or text or call 248-515-2371 so I know you got this message. Also put this number in your cell phone in case you get lost in Cleveland.

Let me know if you have any questions. See you tomorrow.

  • Tuesday (April 20th) Meeting At RCH - Troop Elections

Tuesday is elections for spring & summer camp officers. Those scouts who attended the leadership training and are planning on attending summer camp are encouraged to run. You must be First Class or able to show that you can attain that rank very soon. Elections are for SPL, Scribes and Quartermaster. We will also be having Patrol Leader elections.

  • Last Call for Board of Review before COH

There will be a Board of Review Tues. 4/27 at the Rochester Hills Public Library. If you would like to be scheduled, contact Adam Rolain by Friday, 4/23.  Remember, you must have a Scoutmaster Conference completed before your Board of Review.

  • 2010 Historical Merit Badges

Four(4) 'old' merit badges are being offered again for 2010 only. These are Carpentry, Pathfinding, Signaling, and Tracking. These are being offered as part of the 100 Years of Scouting Celebration. Three were discontinued in 1952 while the fourth was discontinued in 1992. All requirements are as the original published in 1911. All the merit badge requirements must be complete by December 31, 2010 in order to earn the respective badge. The attached file offers a brief overview of the program. More detail requirements can be found on the National BSA website (use the 'Links' button on the home page) and then search on their site under 'historical merit badges'. The file is too big to be loaded to our troop site. I will have several copies at our troop meetings.

  • New (and existing) Parent Meeting Tuesday April 20th

Would like to request all new parents of the last 9 months or so join us for a meeting as a part of the Tuesday April 20th Troop Meeting.   We don't try to "round you up" too often . . . but we think you'll find it worth your time to be with us next week.

We'd like to cover the outlook for Summer Camp in July (Gary Howard has a great plan emerging on this).   This is typically pretty important information for those that have not had a scout attend camp prior . . . . and we think it is a key experience in Scouting that you want to give them!   Some of the longer term families that may have not gone to summer camp last year will want to attend as well.

For those boys that are literally new since the winter we'll also be doing New Scout Inductions at the end of the Troop meeting . . . and we think this is valuable to have a parent there for.   You'll also see a little bit of our boy leader elections . . . . Scout leadership is a critical part of Scouting  . . . .  we do these for 6 month segments and will elect the next crew on Tuesday.

Last, whenever we do a Parent meeting we will invite your expression of concerns or suggestions for how you want to see the Troop run.    Sometimes these are most valuable from some of our newest members . . . you see things that we have all gotten used to!    Your involvement helps make your son's experience the best!

Please join us at the Community House at 7:30 and we'll be done by 9:00
